Mohanlal’s Thudarum records its lowest collection after becoming the second biggest of Malayalam cinema

Mohanlal’s Thudarum, which took the box office by storm upon its release, has finally shown signs of slowing down after a remarkable 21-day theatrical run. The film, which became the second biggest Malayalam hit of all time replacing Mohanlal and Prithviraj's L2: Empuraan, witnessed its lowest single-day collection on its third Thursday, earning an estimated Rs 1.61 crore across all languages.

Directed by Tharun Moorthy, Thudarum opened with strong numbers, raking in Rs 5.25 crore on its opening Friday. What followed was a steady surge over its first weekend, culminating in a powerful Rs 10.5 crore Sunday. The film’s Week 1 total stood at Rs 51.4 crore, an impressive feat that positioned it firmly among the biggest openers in Malayalam cinema.

The momentum carried forward into the second week, though with expected drops. Thudarum managed a Rs 35.35 crore second-week total, maintaining a solid hold despite new releases and the natural weekday declines. The film’s appeal extended beyond Kerala, with its Telugu and Tamil dubbed versions contributing modestly to its cumulative earnings.

In its third weekend, the film saw a slight resurgence, collecting Rs 3 crore on its third Friday, Rs 4 crore on Saturday, and Rs 5 crore on Sunday, driven by positive word-of-mouth and Mohanlal’s enduring fan base. However, post the weekend, weekday collections began to taper off.

The film’s third Monday collection stood at Rs 2.9 crore, followed by Rs 2.3 crore on Tuesday, and Rs 1.94 crore on Wednesday. By Day 21 (third Thursday), Thudarum recorded its lowest single-day figure yet — an estimated Rs 1.61 crore. While this dip was anticipated given the film’s extended theatrical run, it also marks the natural culmination of its box office journey before heading into its final leg in cinemas.

Despite the dip, Thudarum's performance remains one of the most successful runs for a Malayalam film in recent times. It’s a testament to Mohanlal’s enduring star power and the audience’s appetite for compelling, mass-appeal storytelling. The film is now inching closer to wrapping up its theatrical business, with trade analysts expecting a respectable lifetime total before its digital and satellite premieres.

It would be interesting to see if the film again sees a spike in ticket sales over the weekend. With no big films in Malayalam or other languages releasing this week- the field is open for Mohanlal's latest film to close the gap with Manjummel Boys- the biggest hit of Malayalam Cinema which collected over Rs 141 crore in India.
