Katy Perry is all set to join an exciting space mission with Blue Origin, the space company owned by Amazon founder
Jeff Bezos. She will be part of a six-member, all-women team taking off on April 15, 2025, from West Texas as part of the New Shepard NS-31 mission.
According to mint, This mission is special because it's the first all-female space crew since Valentina Tereshkova's legendary solo flight in 1963. The crew was reportedly handpicked by
Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée, who is also one of the six astronauts heading to space.
Apart from Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez, the crew includes:
- Aisha Bowe – a former NASA engineer,
- Amanda Nguyen – a civil rights activist,
- Gayle King – a well-known journalist and CBS Mornings host, and
- Kerianne Flynn – a movie producer.
The mission is part of Blue Origin’s sub-orbital space tourism program, and this flight will take the capsule just past the Kármán line, the official boundary of space located about 100 kilometers above Earth. The rocket is fully automated and will lift off vertically. During the flight, the capsule will separate mid-air and allow the passengers to float in zero gravity for a few minutes before returning safely to Earth using parachutes and a retro rocket system. The entire experience will last roughly 10 minutes.
For space fans wanting to watch the event, Blue Origin will begin live streaming the mission at 8:00 AM Eastern Time (ET) on its YouTube channel and website. Viewers in India can tune in at 7:00 PM IST on April 15, while those following Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) can watch it at 1:30 PM.
In the United States, the event will also be broadcast on CBS, beginning at 7:00 AM EST. A special segment titled "Gayle Goes to Space" will air at 9:00 AM EST on the same day, following live updates on CBS Mornings.
Katy Perry, who is 40 years old, took to Instagram to share her excitement about the journey. She mentioned that going to space had been a dream of hers for the past 15 years, and she was thrilled to finally make it come true. She praised her fellow crewmates, calling them “incredible and inspiring women,” and revealed her call sign onboard would be ‘Feather’. She also mentioned that she hoped to sing in space during the trip.
According to Perry, she had been training inside the capsule for the last few days and truly believed that dreaming big and speaking those dreams out loud could make them real.
This mission marks Blue Origin’s 11th crewed suborbital flight, though the company has kept the cost of tickets under wraps. Still, the focus remains on the historical importance of this all-female flight and what it could mean for the future of space travel.
