Sportscaster Erin Andrews has long been a fixture in the world of football, but in 2016, she faced one of the toughest challenges of her life—one that had nothing to do with sports. During the third week of the NFL season, Andrews received an unexpected call from her gynecologist that changed everything.

Routine check-ups helped Erin Andrews detect cervical cancer early and take action

"I just thought, 'This isn't good,'" Erin Andrews recalled. Moments later, she heard the words no one ever wants to hear: cervical cancer. "I can't feel my arms, I can't feel my legs. I am totally numb," Andrews said. "Literally the first thing I said to my doctor was, 'I don't have time for this.'"
Despite the devastating news, Erin Andrews chose to keep her diagnosis private until after the Super Bowl, continuing to work while undergoing treatment. When she finally shared her experience, she was met with a surprising response. "When I decided to come out with the news that I had cervical cancer, I had so many people—even good friends—say, 'I haven't been to the doctor in forever,'" she said.

Andrews was fortunate—her cancer was detected early during a routine check-up. "Every year before my season starts, I go and I get checked," she said, crediting her mother for instilling the importance of regular doctor visits. "Because I caught it early, we were able to treat it."

Erin Andrews urges fans to overcome the fear of going to the doctor

Andrews understands why many people avoid check-ups. Some find them inconvenient, while others fear the possibility of bad news. "There is such a fear of going to the doctor because you don't want to get bad news," she admitted. She almost canceled her appointment that day, finding excuses like heavy traffic to justify skipping it.
To encourage more people to prioritize their health, Andrews has partnered with AstraZeneca to promote Screen, a campaign that highlights the importance of cancer screenings. A limited-edition t-shirt was also launched to remind people to “get body checked” and take charge of their health.

Even after beating cervical cancer, Andrews continues to stay proactive about her health. "I literally almost bailed out of a dermatologist appointment this past week," she said, but she pushed herself to go. Knowing her family history of melanoma, she recognized how crucial early detection is.
Her message is simple: don’t wait until it’s too late. "I am so grateful that I go get checked every single year," Andrews said. "Because of that, my cancer was treatable."
