What did Philip Noyce see in when they appeared for the screen test? He says, "With both of them, they made all the right choices when they did the screen test. It was like - Oh! my goodness. They revealed the character to me, even though it was a screen test. They were the teachers. So that's something when you see it, you can't deny that the person has elevated their skill of interpretation. The ability to draw you into the character, which is so important, is what they do, or what stars do. They take us, they grab us round the shoulders, pull us in. Both of them had the ability to define humanism, human nature. But also, there's one other thing. And this is what a great actor is - it's not what you see; it's what you think you see, which is why they say that less is more in acting."

He explains, "This is the difference between a star and an everyman actor. The star is not what they show you. It's what they don't show you - that you imagine is inside them. It's what you don't see that pulls you in. You're fascinated by what else there is underneath, and you can feel it, but you can't see it. You can't define it. But it's there. So that's what I found with both of those actors. I found this in Michael Caine and, of course, in Denzel (Washington). No matter what he's playing."
