Moments before Donald Trump began his address to Congress, as he walked into the chamber, Democratic Rep. Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico held up a sign that read, “This is not normal.” However as Trump passed her, a person across the aisle suddenly snatched the sign from her hands and tossed it into the air.
During his address, Trump directly addressed the Democrats in the chamber, claiming they would never applaud his accomplishments no matter how significant. He insisted they would remain unmoved even if he cured the world’s most devastating diseases or achieved record economic growth.
"I could find a cure to the most devastating disease — a disease that would wipe out entire nations or announce the answers to the greatest economy in history — or the stoppage of crime to the lowest levels ever recorded. And these people sitting right here will not clap, will not stand, and certainly will not cheer for these astronomical achievements," Trump said.
Trump began his speech with the words, “America is back,” setting the tone for an address that sought to highlight his administration’s achievements and vision for his second term. He reflected on his inaugural address, calling it the ‘dawn of the golden age of America’ and claimed his leadership had ushered in a period of unmatched success.

Several Democratic lawmakers staged a silent protest during the speech, holding signs criticising Trump and his allies. Some read “Musk steals,” referencing the billionaire’s close ties with the president, while others said “false,” “save Medicaid,” and “protect veterans.”
The speech comes at a pivotal moment in Trump’s presidency, as he faces economic turbulence and foreign policy challenges. Inflation remains a top concern for voters, with consumer sentiment reflecting growing unease. Meanwhile, Trump’s decision to freeze military aid to Ukraine has further strained international relations, with Democrats showing their support for Kyiv by wearing blue and yellow.
Just a day before his speech, he imposed heavy tariffs on Canadian, Mexican, and Chinese imports, prompting immediate retaliation and concerns of a trade war.
Before the President's address, Speaker Mike Johnson made a pointed remark, referencing the dramatic moment from Trump’s first term when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore up his speech. “We will not be ripping up the speech tonight,” Johnson said. “I would like to frame it in gilded gold.”
