T unveils energy policy 2025 to boost renewable power generation
Hyderabad: The state govt said it would leverage renewable and alternative energy solutions in the state to meet the increasing power demand. “This year, although Telangana’s peak electricity demand reached 16,918 MW, we were able to provide uninterrupted power supply to the people. The Telangana govt has introduced the ‘Clean & Green Energy Policy - 2025’, aiming to accelerate the shift toward renewable and eco-friendly power generation,” the state govt said in its budget presentation on Thursday.
Under the new policy, the state has set a target of 20,000 MW of renewable energy by 2030 and plans to expand it to 40,000 MW by 2035, reinforcing its commitment to a clean energy-driven future. To strengthen grid stability and energy storage capabilities, the govt is setting up a 250 MW / 500 MHz Battery Energy Storage System in Shankarpally. Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TREDCO) are jointly working on geothermal energy-based power generation, the govt said.
In the budget, the govt proposed Rs 21,221 crore for 2025-2026, of which Rs 11,500 crore is allocated towards power subsidies. For the Gruha Jyothi scheme, up to 200 units of free electricity are being provided to 50 lakh households and 30,000 govt educational institutions across the state. To sustain and expand these initiatives, the govt has earmarked Rs 3,000 crore in the new budget.
The state govt said the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant (YTPS) at Damaracherla in Nalgonda, all the five units would become operational by May 2025.
