Guwahati: Campaigning for the final phase of panchayat elections in Assam concluded on Monday. Elections in this final phase will be held on May 7 across 12,130 stations in 13 districts of central and lower Assam.
The first phase of voting was on May 2. Counting of votes for the two-phase rural election will be held on May 11.
The second phase encompasses Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup(Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon and Darrang districts involving over 91 lakh voters of which about 46 lakh are males and about 44 lakh females.
There over 29,000 candidates in the fray in 181 zila parishad constituencies, 87 anchalik parishads and 10,530 gaon panchayat constituencies.
Officials reported 1,289 candidates comprising 21 ZP members, 151 AP members and 1,117 GP ward members have already been declared winners uncontested.
The first phase covered 14 districts: Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi.
